The back story

About Puebla and Cholula: Talavera, mole and a pyramid under a church

UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Puebla as a World Heritage site in 1987 (whc.unesco.org): a grid of churches and houses faced in Talavera tiles around the cathedral. A short drive west, Cholula’s church of the Virgen de los Remedios stands on top of a great pyramid, with the volcano Popocatépetl beyond on a clear day.

Getting there

By coach from the city’s eastern terminal, the TAPO, or by the toll motorway east.

Puebla

The cathedral and the Zócalo, the tiled façades of the historic centre, and mole poblano at lunch.

Coaches run from the TAPO terminal; by car, take the toll motorway east.

Cholula

The church on the pyramid, and the view to the volcanoes in the morning, before the clouds build.

Our advice: go for the day, but leave early; Puebla is best at lunchtime.
